What interesting times we live in. Spikes in new cases of COVID-19 are occurring in hotspots around the globe. In fact, the highest daily number on record occurred yesterday with 280,000 new cases being reported worldwide. Here in the U.S., new cases remain in the 65,000 – 70,000 level each day, but more troubling is the uptick in deaths to just over 1,000 per day recently.
Indiana experienced it’s single highest day yesterday with more than 950 new cases. Because of the recent increase in cases, Governor Holcomb has announced a state-wide mask mandate set to begin next Monday (July 27th). In addition, Dr. Birx with the federal coronavirus taskforce listed Indianapolis as one of 10 hotspots in the nation and warned local officials to take additional safeguards. In response, Mayor Hogsett has issued new restrictions for Marion county set to begin tomorrow at 5:00 PM including delaying in-person attendance at schools until August 5th, limiting non-religious gatherings to 50 people, and limiting capacity at restaurants, bars, gyms, etc.
Fortunately, Hancock County continues to have a better experience than other parts of the region, thus it is important for us to continue practicing common sense prevention techniques as well as common courtesy – physical distancing, wearing face coverings, washing hands, staying home when sick, etc.
