Just a quick update today to remind us that the virus is growing very, very quickly in Hancock County. For the majority of the pandemic, the average number of daily new cases was between 5 and 10. For the last week the average has been 25. The number of new cases recorded in our county yesterday was 53!
Fortunately, we have seen only transient increases of in-patients seriously ill with COVID-19, thus our COVID-admission numbers remain low compared to other hospitals our size in Indiana. It is likely that the current persistent increase in case volumes in our county will translate to higher levels of patients seeking care, thus it is imperative that we continuously practice the basics of prevention – properly wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding crowded indoor spaces, etc.
Remember two things: 1) it’s not knowing what to do that is the problem, it is actually forcing yourself to do it when your know you are suffering from COVID fatigue, and 2) transmission of the virus is far, far more likely to occur in the community than in a healthcare setting, so those are the places we need to keep our guard the highest.
All that said, please get outside and enjoy the glorious weather that is forecast for this weekend, it is a beautiful way to start November!
Best
